Tucano

Tucano is the ship we would choose when the Amazon needs to feel like an expedition, not a floating hotel. She carries just 18 guests in 9 outside staterooms, all with air conditioning, opening windows, insect screens and private bathrooms. The cabins are small, because this is a real river vessel, but they are warm, wood-panelled and practical. The public spaces do the important work: a forward salon that doubles as dining room and lounge, a wide mid-deck balcony, and a full observation deck for watching the forest close in around the Rio Negro. The best parts happen away from the ship. Tucano is built for the least inhabited reaches of the Central Amazon, with shallow-draft navigation, small launches, kayaks, rainforest walks, piranha fishing, swimming, community visits and early wildlife outings. The rhythm is active: often several excursions a day, with naturalist guides and small groups. Trips usually start and end in Manaus. The Central Amazon is good year-round: rainy season, roughly mid-December to mid-May, can bring fruiting and flowering forest; the drier months, roughly August to November, bring lower water, beaches and different wildlife behavior. Choose Tucano if you want deep Rio Negro access, strong guiding and a serious expedition feel. Do not choose it for large cabins, elevators, glossy luxury or a ship-first holiday.

Zaltana

The Rio Negro is the point here: dark water, flooded forest, white-sand beaches and communities whose lives are shaped by the river. Zaltana keeps that world close. She carries up to 20 guests in 10 Standard Cabins, each about 13 m2, with air conditioning, private bathroom, hot shower, double or twin beds, safe, charging points, large windows and biodegradable bath products. The boat has a panoramic dining room, indoor lounge, open decks, lecture room, sun deck, massage area and enough space to gather without feeling like a cruise ship. Days are active and very local. From Manaus you move into the Meeting of the Waters, Lake Janauari, the Cuieiras River, Anavilhanas, Tres Unidos and, on some programs, Jau National Park. Expect early small-boat outings, forest walks, canoeing, swimming when conditions allow, community visits, cassava and river-food experiences, fishing traditions, beach dinners and night excursions. The best season depends on what you want: higher water usually brings easier access into flooded forest, while lower water reveals beaches and makes some walks easier. Arrive in Manaus the day before; transfers normally run from city hotel to the boat and onward to airport or hotel. Choose Zaltana if you want a short, serious Brazilian Amazon journey with comfort and strong guiding. Skip it if you want big cabins, elevators, several restaurants or a ship-first holiday.

Sukapha

ABN Sukapha is for travellers who want Assam to stay in the foreground. The ship is small, warm and practical, built around the Brahmaputra's wide water, shifting banks and long conversations with the places along the route. She carries only 24 guests in 12 upper-deck twin/double cabins. Cabins are air-conditioned, bamboo-panelled and en suite, with large sliding windows that keep the river visible even when you are resting. The public spaces are exactly what this journey needs: a dining room on the main deck, a saloon with library, a top sundeck, and a small spa. Cane furniture, handlooms and local objects bring Assam into the ship without making the design feel staged. The days are about the river, not entertainment onboard. Expect villages, wildlife country, tea landscapes, temples, craft and river islands, depending on the chosen route and water conditions. The most comfortable season is October to April. Choose ABN Sukapha if you want a smaller, characterful Brahmaputra vessel with real local texture. It is less suited to travellers who want large cabins, a pool, several restaurants or a highly polished cruise atmosphere.

Scottish Highlander

What we particularly appreciate about Scottish Highlander is the balance it strikes between intimacy and space. At 36 m( 117 feet long), she offers a genuinely comfortable setting for just eight guests, with three twin/double staterooms and one larger junior suite, all centrally heated and en suite. The atmosphere feels more like a well-run country house than a cruise ship, with tartan accents, wood panelling and a relaxed, sociable saloon. This is a journey best suited to travellers who want Scotland at a gentler pace: dramatic scenery, lochs, canal locks, castle visits and time to simply watch the Highlands pass by. Compared with larger river vessels, the experience is quieter and more personal, with a small, attentive crew and a very strong sense of place.
