What we love about the Merlijn
Owner-Operated Soul: Coen and Cristina are not just managers; they are your hosts, creating a personal atmosphere where everyone knows your name by day two.
True Exclusivity: With a maximum of 24 guests, you avoid the crowds entirely.
Active Immersion: The integration of high-quality cycling (including e-bikes) allows you to explore the riverbanks deeply, rather than just viewing them from a distance.
Unique Access: The vessel ties up in small, charming ports that the large commercial ships simply cannot reach.

We consider the MS Merlijn to be a unique gem in the European river cruising landscape. It effectively bridges the gap between a private yacht charter and a commercial river cruise. Hosting just 24 guests, this vessel offers an intimacy that is simply impossible to replicate on standard 190-passenger "Longships."
What defines the Merlijn experience is the personal touch of its owners, Coen and Cristina, who live on board and manage every aspect of the operation. Coen navigates the ship—often with an "open bridge" policy where guests are welcome to watch—while Cristina oversees the hospitality. The atmosphere is that of a floating home rather than a hotel; there is a "living room" feel to the lounge, complete with a wood-burning stove for cozy evenings.
We must emphasize that this is technically a "Bike & Barge" concept. While non-cyclists are welcome to stay on board to enjoy the scenery, the daily rhythm is built around active exploration. The ship often docks in small village marinas inaccessible to larger vessels, allowing for a quiet, authentic connection to the region. Note that this ship is not suitable for guests with severe mobility issues, as stairs are steep and there is no elevator.

Dining on board is a highlight, not for its formality, but for its freshness and heart. Breakfast is a robust buffet designed to fuel active days, while dinners are three-course, sit-down affairs. The cuisine is family-style and market-fresh; because they cook for only two dozen people, the quality is akin to a private dinner party. We particularly enjoy the lack of rigid dress codes—the focus is on the food and the company, not the attire.
We value MS Merlijn’s inherently low-impact approach to travel. By utilizing bicycles for shore excursions rather than large motorcoaches, the carbon footprint per guest is significantly reduced. Furthermore, the small guest count allows the onboard chef to source ingredients from local markets daily, supporting small regional producers along the Danube and Rhine.
