To plan your journey, it is helpful to understand the Douro's seasonal rhythm. Unlike other European waterways, the Douro River is closed to overnight navigation from mid-December to early March for annual maintenance on the river's lock systems.

For the rest of the year, here is what to expect:

• Spring (April to June): Mild weather and green landscapes. Early spring can occasionally see higher water levels and stronger river currents after winter rains, which can briefly affect navigation schedules.
• Summer (July and August): Very warm and sunny, with temperatures in the valley often rising above 40°C (104°F). It is a beautiful time to travel if you enjoy warm weather, though air conditioning on board is essential.
• Autumn (September to October): Highly stable water levels, pleasant temperatures, and the grape harvest season (vindimas). The valley comes alive with activity, making this the most popular season for small-ship travel on the Douro.
